Tungurahua is a steep-sided stratovolcano with a perfect cone reaching 5016 m. The volcano lies 25 km east of Ambato, Ecuador's fourth largest city. The steep flanks of the volcano are used for agriculture and many small villages and a larger town, our Baños de Agua Santa cradle the mountain on the northern and western side. Tungurahua, also known as "The Black Giant," is the largest volcano in Ecuador yet the most easily climbed, since Baños is already set on its hillside. Periodic drills keep residents and visitors aware of the potential risks.
